“This series will give you tools, tips, techniques, strategies, and solid solutions for managing your depression as well as many other mental and emotional challenges”.
Q. Lewis, is there a way to control or manage clinical depression without prescription drugs?
A. I understand your situation.
I experienced existential depression for many years.
The term “existential depression” is used to describe a type of depression that revolves specifically around the fundamental issues of existence, such as life, death, disease, and oppression. Gifted children, who tend to be highly sensitive and curious, are especially prone to this form of depression. I was one of these children.
I explored many approaches to finding relief from my depression. I now know that depression is not one thing; is not caused by one thing; nor is it cured or even managed by one approach. It is an umbrella term for a condition characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in previously rewarding or enjoyable activities.
Common symptoms include:
· craving unhealthy foods
· lack of energy
· lack of hope
· sleep issues (too much or too
· trouble focusing or concentrating
In recent years I created a course on healing depression that includes much information concerning all aspects of mental and emotional challenges.
After becoming familiar with Medium.com I immediately recognized that this would be the perfect platform to create a series of stories on depression and natural approaches that do not involve the use of prescription drugs, especially antidepressants.
As you explore this series please keep in mind that the information presented in all the stories is for informational purposes only. It is based on scientific studies, clinical experience, and/or traditional usage of food, herbs, nutritional supplements, and various body/mind approaches to the healing of depression and associated symptoms. The results I have described in these stories may not necessarily occur in all individuals. For many of the physical and emotional conditions discussed, treatment with prescription or over-the-counter medication may be advised. Consult your doctor, mental health professional, wellness consultant, and/or pharmacist for any health problem and before using any supplements or before making any changes in prescribed medications.
As for me, and my depression, the “cure” came from a very unexpected place — Applied Game Theory. After watching the movie “A Beautiful Mind”, about the Nobel Prize mathematician John Nash, I began to think more and more about game theory. I asked myself if I could take this idea, and expand it into the concept where I would see life as a game to be won and lost? I read everything I could about creating strategies for becoming a happier person. Over time I even created a Depression playbook.
In this “Depression Playbook”, I organized a collection of plays and strategies, all compiled and organized into one binder.
Just as a sports coach might do I organized my playbook into sections for nutrition, meal plans, nutritional supplements, exercise, spiritual practices, life skills, and motivational and inspirational influences.
Example of How I used my Game Theory/Depression Playbook.
1. Every morning I meditate for ten minutes. Then I do a little yoga and Tao Chi.
2. I take nutritional and herbal supplements known to support body processesthat reduce depression symptoms.
3. I call two or three friends daily. These are not therapy sessions. We talk for a few minutes, I ask how they are and they do the same. Then we share positive things about the world.
4. I work with a trained therapist/life coach to address emotional challenges and possible flaws in my attitude or way of thinking
That’s pretty much it. Though this consistent game-based strategy and tactics I really haven’t experienced the extreme form of depression that paralyzed me for so many years. I still get sad or angry about the state of the world, but I don’t sit around moping and complaining. I get up and do something positive.
I certainly cannot say this approach will work for you, but it might. It did the trick for me. Why not give it three months? Create a depression Playbook with the support of your therapist or a professionally trained life coach.
If you want to learn about applied game theory, the system that helped me transcend my existential depression, please read the article and watch the video below. The article (a 6-minute read) explains the approach and there is a more in-depth video embedded in the article. Both were created so they would be understood by 12-year-old.
