What is your “philanthropic wealth style?”

Philanthropy consists of “private initiatives, for the public good, focusing on quality of life”. Philanthropy contrasts with business initiatives, which are private initiatives for private good, focusing on material gain, and with government endeavors, which are public initiatives for the public good, e.g., focusing on the provision of public services. A person who practices philanthropy is a philanthropist. Though on the surface philanthropy seems the same because of the intention involved, each philanthropist is likely to have his or her own fellowship style.

Your wealth style is your “relatively consistent preference and inclinations across contexts.”

Personality can be defined as a dynamic and organized set of personal traits and patterns of behavior. Personality includes modes of thought, impulses, attitudes, feelings, strivings, actions, responses to stress, responses to opportunity, and everyday modes of interacting with others. Personality style is apparent when these elements of personality are expressed in a characteristically dynamic and repeated combination.

Essentially, your personality style is your organizing principle. It propels you on your life, your business path, and how you choose to invest, speculate, or gamble.

It represents the orderly arrangement of all your attributes, thoughts, feelings, attitudes, behaviors, and coping mechanisms. It is the distinctive pattern of your psychological functioning — the way you think, feel, and behave — that makes you definitely you.”

“When money realizes that it is in good hands, it wants to stay and multiply in those hands.”

The origin of personality style is in some combination of genetic inheritance and environmental influence.

The concept of personality style is broader than and includes the concepts of “personality traits”, “personality type”, and “temperament”, or as a classification of type as with the Holland Codes.

“Personality styles should be recognized as constructed approximations of human experience” and should be arrayed on a continuum rather than be reified or totalized. One should be vigilant to deconstruct the uses of personality style in how you invest or run your business in favor of ongoing reflexivity about the use and misuse of such labels.

As a philanthropy consultant, I find that there are five primary natural wealth-building/philanthropy styles that will stand out. A person can certainly switch from one style to another, but they will generally favor one over the others. Study the five styles and decide which one fits your personality?

The five styles are:

1. Visionary Wealth Builder/Philanthropist

2. Passive Wealth Builder/Philanthropist

3. Active Wealth Builder/Philanthropist

4. Delegating Wealth Builder/Philanthropist

5. The Influence Gamer Wealth Builder/Philanthropist

Takeaway

The range of normal variation in styles can explain much human behavior without reference to notions of disfunction or a misunderstanding of how to make wise choices. Personality can be reconceptualized as being on a continuum, with one end being a more adaptive inclination and on and at the other end self-destructive rigidity.

The wise philanthropist will do self-assessment to isolate their personality style, and then invest accordingly.
