Today’s Big Fact-Based News Story — Saturday, November 28, 2020
That Monolith in the Utah desert. ‘2020 an Earth Odessey’.
On November 18, 2020, researchers from the State of Utah were carrying out a survey of sheep on the desert from a helicopter. As they scanned the landscape one of the biologists spotted an unusual structure and told pilot Bret Hutchings to fly over the location again. Hutchings described the moment of discovery.
“One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it. He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing back there — we’ve got to go look at it!’”
Hutchings said the object appeared manmade and was planted in the ground, not dropped from the sky.
So what was it? A metallic pillar 9.5 feet (2.9 m) tall.
This is what is known.
- In November 2020, the metallic pillar 9.5 feet (2.9 m) tall was discovered in the red canyons of southeast Utah.
-Widely described as a monolith, it appears to be made of stainless steel together into the shape of a triangular prism.
- It dates to sometime between August 2015 and October 2016,
- Its origin remains unknown.
- It is assumed that it was not placed there by unseen extraterrestrials.
Public officials announced the discovery but withheld its location to prevent people from becoming lost while trying to find it. Within hours, the public found it on Google Earth and began visiting the structure where it has been erected on public land.
Although the word monolith refers to a single great stone, the word has become closely associated with the monolith from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which the Utah monolith resembles.
What is the connection of the Utah Monolith to the movie Monolith?
In these difficult times of war, Covid, and misguided technology, it is important to remember that humans are creative and innovative creatures always on a quest to achieve their full potential.
In Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey, the Monoliths are machines built by unseen extraterrestrials.
In the series of novels (and the films based on these), three Monoliths are discovered in the solar system by hominids and humans. The response of the characters to their discovery drives the plot of the series. It also influences the fictional history of the series, particularly by encouraging humankind to move forward in their quest for knowledge and wisdom, and tech progress.
The first Monolith appears at the beginning of the story, set in prehistoric times. It is discovered by a group of hominids and somehow triggers a considerable shift in evolution, starting with the ability to use tools and weaponry. It is later revealed that thousands of other monoliths exist elsewhere in the Solar System.
Here is the scene in the movie where ancient hominids encounter the first monolith.
