An Introduction to the aspects of love.
There are a number of things in life that it is difficult to define though we have likely, attempted to do so since the beginning of recorded history. These things are God, culture, art, truth, and more than anything ‘love’.
Some will argue with me and insist they have an understanding of love. However, given a bit of time and life experience, they will return and say, ‘I was deeply mistaken’. They will be able to tell you of the agony and the ecstasy of love but as for a specific definition…on this, they will surrender, and either laugh, cry, or stand in front of you in a state of detached numbness, or just smile gently while nodding their head up and down or shaking it side to side with that same Mona Lisa smile.
In life, there is likely, nothing as important as love, so since I have your attention, even for just a few minutes, let’s explore the nature of love.
Love encompasses a range of strong and positive emotional and mental states, from the most sublime virtue or good habit, the deepest interpersonal affection, to the simplest pleasure. An example of this range of meanings is that the love of a mother differs from the love of a spouse, which differs from the love of food.
Most commonly, love refers to a feeling of a strong attraction and emotional attachment.
As a noun, love can be defined as an intense feeling of deep affection.
“babies fill parents with intense feelings of love” ·
It’s synonyms include:
- deep affection · Fondness, tenderness, warmth, intimacy, attachment.
- a great interest and pleasure in something, liking; weakness for; partiality; leaning towards; proclivity; inclination; “his love for football” ·
- a person or thing that one loves. “she was the love of his life” ·
loved one · love of one’s life · beloved · dear · dearest · darling ·dear one ·
(in tennis, squash, and some other sports) a score of zero; nil. “love fifteen” ·
feeling a deep romantic or sexual attachment to (someone). “do you love me?”
be in love with · be infatuated with · be smitten with · be besotted with ·
Love is considered to be both positive and negative, with its virtue representing human compassion, kindness, and affection, as “the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another” and its vice representing human moral flaw, akin to selfishness, vanity, and egotism, as potentially leading people into a type of mania, obsessiveness or codependency. It may also describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one’s self, or animals. In its various forms, love acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal relationships and, owing to its central psychological importance, is one of the most common themes in the creative arts. Love has been postulated to be a function that keeps human beings together against menaces and to facilitate the continuation of the species.
There are many paths in life. But the longest of them all is the path to the heart.
If you resist this path, you may take decades of struggle to find it again. If you surrender and embrace it, you’ll be home where the heart lives.
We’ve all been blinded by the blanket of emotions that comes from falling down the precipice of union into love. While we only have one word for it, the ancient Greeks in their pursuit of wisdom and self-understanding, found many different varieties of love. If we live life with wisdom we may all experience them all at some point.
When we understand the different types of love out there, we can become conscious of how deep our connection is with ourselves and the other people in our lives.
